Bah Dah Buup Bah Baaah, I'm Lovin' It!

Things I'm totally lovin' right now and just want to share:

Franklin. How adorable is this dog? He's just ***such*** a good little guy! Here he is getting tons of love from Gary and our friend Shun:

Thanksgiving. How great is a holiday that is solely about spending time with family, watching a parade or a football game on tv, and eating copious amounts of food? I seriously think it's one of my favorite days of the year.

This Turkey Day, Gary and I will celebrate it the same way we have for quite a few years now: Gar's parents, Aud & Big G, will come up from their home in Connecticut early in the day, bringing with them a giant, tasty (well, I think tasty) bird that will go straight away into the oven.

Meanwhile, Gar and I will have spent all of Wednesday afternoon and evening making all of the side dishes, including:
  • Garlic, onion, and parmesan-infused mashed potatoes with fresh basil
  • Roasted sweet potatoes with fall spices (think: cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves)
  • Green beans with caramelized onions and almond slivers
  • Simple mashed butternut squash with a bit of brown sugar and fresh cracked black peppercorns
  • My famous homemade bread stuffing (made outside of the bird... yet still moist and tasty, trust)
  • Gary's homemade cranberry sauce
  • Homemade vegetarian gravy
  • Fresh oven-toasted rolls
Hungry yet?

Speaking of all that lovely food, we just went out this weekend and bought all of the Thanksgiving supplies we would need for the cook-off on Wednesday, including a boatload of fresh produce.

You know what I love about truly fresh organic produce? Finding bugs in your vegetables.

Seriously, wouldn't you rather find a dead bug in your celery, knowing "Oh well, I have to give it an extra vigorous scrubbing now," than the alternative of the bug having been killed by the boatloads of chemical insecticides that are sprayed all over most of the normal produce sold?

Gone Baby Gone. Gary and I saw this last night (one of the two times per year that we actually see a movie in the theater), and oh my God if you now live in or have ever lived in Boston, you really need to see this movie.

It's Ben Affleck's directorial debut, and he really nailed the important subtleties (some of which are not so subtle... think accent) that make up an accurate portrait of a working-class neighborhood such as Dorchester (um, that would be where I live).

The story moved in directions that were unexpected, the acting was superb (especially Casey Affleck and Ed Harris... Morgan Freeman? not so much... he always seems to be the same character, same delivery, in nearly all of his recent films), and the cinematography was fantastic. Boston really seemed to be a distinct character in and of itself.

Seriously, you should see this film. It really was amazing. (Lys and Jilly D, it'll make you homesick.)

The best part? In one of the final scenes, Casey Affleck walks down a side street, and you can see a busy boulevard behind him. And Gary and I turned to each other and smiled. Because? The Vietnamese bakery that is clearly visible behind Mr. Affleck? That would be right around the corner from our house. And I mean quite literally around the corner from our house. Too funny.
